When I temporarily switched from an iPhone to an Android phone last week, I was bracing for a world of hurt. I’ve owned only Apple phones ever since buying the first-generation iPhone in 2007. And, like many, I’ve bought other Apple products that pair nicely, including AirPods, an Apple Watch and an iPad. I was initially surprised by how simple it was to shift my iPhone data to an Android smartphone made by Google. After I called my carrier, Verizon, to transfer my phone number to the Android device, my mission was accomplished: I had become an Android convert.

AI bots, on the other hand, will do whatever you tell them to, practically for free. So researchers are starting to use chatbots as fake people from whom they can extract data about real people. In July 2020, Facebook introduced a walled-off simulation of itself, populated with millions of AI bots, to study online toxicity. His team created hundreds of personas for its Twitter bots — telling each one things like "you are a male, middle-income, evangelical Protestant who loves Republicans, Donald Trump, the NRA, and Christian fundamentalists." Scientists create experiments to be simpler than reality, to offer explanatory power uncomplicated by the messiness of real life.

A group of researchers asked AI to design a walking robot. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen a group of researchers asked an AI to design a robot that could walk, it created a "small, squishy and misshapen" thing that walks by spasming when filled with air. "We told the AI that we wanted a robot that could walk across land. The AI began with a small rubber block and modeled different shapes before arriving at the final design that could walk. What’s the difference between $100 in cash and $100 in a checking account? It goes into its computer and marks up your checking account by whatever amount you borrowed. Congress creates money from thin air by deficit spending and the Federal Reserve creates it by buying bonds. The more you think about money, the weirder it starts to feel. The government’s money used to be backed by real stuff like gold and silver.

General view of the site of the derailment of a train carrying hazardous waste, in East Palestine, Ohio, March 2, 2023. Soon after the derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, a team of researchers began roving the small town in a Nissan van. Longer-term exposure to concentrations of acrolein at the detected levels may be a health concern, the researchers wrote. Low levels of exposure to acrolein are associated with slow breathing and burning in the nose and the throat. The levels of vinyl chloride that were detected, meanwhile, were below the Environmental Protection Agency's threshold for long-term risks.

New AI technology at the drive-thru at a Carl's Jr. location. In real-world situations, reactions to AI drive-thrus are still mixed. “We expect AI to augment the competitive advantages of restaurants with digital culture.”Short-staffed restaurants may see AI as a way to fill in the gaps. “There aren’t enough at-scale examples of voice AI in action, especially in this use case,” to say that people would prefer AI to an employee, said McAllister. By the time those examples exist, AI in drive-thrus may already be the norm.

From drive-thru to back-of-house operations to predictive ordering for consumers, restaurant brands are starting to pilot artificial intelligence to streamline food service. McDonald's , for its part, sold McD Tech Labs to IBM in 2021, entering a strategic partnership to help bring AI technology to drive-thru lanes. McD Tech Labs, which was formerly known as Apprente before McDonald's acquired it, used AI to understand drive-thru orders. Del Taco is also using voice-activated AI for orders at its drive-thru, as is Wingstop for orders placed by phone. For Panera, it's a question of, "How do we redeploy our people to higher value, higher quality guest experiences," said Chief Digital Officer George Hanson.

Those are crazy high benefit-cost ratios, considering that a lot of nonprofits would be happy with a ratio of 10 to 1. I’m citing it because Khan has a new plan to make the ratio, whatever it is, even higher. I watched a TED Talk he gave on April 18 about his A.I. “My intellectual selfishness is that I really like making videos,” Khan told me. (Though he’s no longer the only person making videos.)

Too many people got Wyoming — more than actually lived in Wyoming — and this turn of events was so exciting that people stomped over to Facebook to protest. Magic of the presto-chango variety always depends on distraction, but the distractions are the magic of “Mrs. Davis,” which throughout its exhilarating mix of comedy, action, obscure movie references and gothic-Catholic sleight-of-hand mounts a very plausible and therefore disturbing premise: God isn’t dead. He is just less influential than an algorithm. The algorithm is known as Mrs. Davis—or “Ma’am” in the U.K., or “Madonna” in Rome—and is the all-seeing, all-knowing, not-quite-all-merciful manifestation of artificial intelligence to whom humanity has plighted its troth in this eight-part manifestation of real intelligence from creators Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof . Mrs. Davis is, was and ever shall be—unless a heretical nun named Simone, aka Lizzie ( Betty Gilpin ), can win the bet she has made with the omniscient formulation that she calls “it” and find the Holy Grail, on which occasion Mrs. Davis has agreed to self-destruct.

LONDON, Sept 21 (Reuters) - A sugar-based alternative to vinyl could help to decarbonise the music industry, according to its developer. Acting CEO of Evolution Music Marc Carey said sonically and in terms of equalisation the music recorded on the bioplastic records is "absolutely spot on." 1/5 Marc Carey, CEO of Evolution Music, holds a bioplastic record made with a sugar-based alternative to vinyl, in London, Britain September 8, 2022. A richer sound, cover art and the ability to cradle a vinyl record in the hands contribute to the growing emotional appeal for LPs. "The music industry, the creative arts, should be at the forefront of innovation ... and typically, cultural change is what affects political and social change," Carey said.
